River Rother Etchingham to Robertsbridge
Best run after a lot of rain Grade 2 at most.
From A21 head for Hurstgreen take the first right before the pedestrian crossing signposted Etchingham rail station ,Park in the station it has CCTV so its safe to park and is free sat/sun The put in is 100 meters from car park there is a gate just before second bridge. For Robetsbridge stay on A21 to next roundabout at bottom of hill straight forward then first left after crossing river about, 500 meters down there is a small layby and gate ,there is only room for 3 cars at most ,I have never had any probs but there is a caravan site just up the road. As for access hummm there are public foot paths both ends and have never had any probs when in flood or outside the fishing season ,march 31/june 16 I have fished this myself for years and hardly see anyone using this stretch ? Water levels Best after a lot of rain Grade 2 at most The river Seal launch down bank then a nice straight bit to warm up ,first drop is a broken seal weir with large pool at bottom goodish surf wave, the eddyline is like behind the bridge at yalding ,but has good safe eddys The river then meanders to next weir which at some levels has a play wave, and large pool good for learning to roll in deep moving water Next look for the rail bridge just beyond this is a concrete foot bridge that MUST be portaged stop about 100 meters from bridge there is a stepped bank on river right ,this is a foot path and style; to get back in , at side of bridge river right , further down river the banks get stepper with some over hanging trees to the next broken weir great for flat spins but that’s about it on the far left of the weir is a iron spike that is just below the surface at high levels . After the next couple of meanders the flow slows and sometimes gets choked with debries in bank side trees so may need portage ,under the old A21 bridge and you are nearly to the best play spot ,pass under A21 and you can see Robert bridge pumping station , this is a seal weir and side shoot in high water this can be run either way but at lower levels you have to run the shoot . The shoot at a good levell has a great play wave but the concrete walls can take a few nicks out of your boat , but we;re used to that? The seal weir is ok for playing in if a little shallow at the wave ,the pool has s a steep bank rivet left which is the best for reboating swimmers as the right is slightly undercut with tree roots. Video of The Wave at Rober's Bridge pumping station. Exit up side stream and under foot bridge get out right bank a bit steep ,or walk throw pumping station ? no foot path ?.follow track up to layby The rother is a great place to learn and play in small groups it tacks about 1and ½ hours to run and 10 to 15 mins to do the shuttle.
