Below the Bridge

Yalding Bridge
This guide is written looking upstream towards the Yalding bridge.

Arch 1

This only works when the automatic sluice gate is open a fair amount, due to the raised ledge under this arch. You can walk to across the ledge, under the arch when the river is at normal levels and when the gate is open this ledge forms a great little surf wave that is perfect for beginners, it is shallow with a very calm eddies on both sides.

Arch 2

The flow through this arch is the most powerful as it is directly in line with the left hand sluice gate. Normally this just provides a chute of fast moving water that can be used for stern dips, at high levels there is a reforming wave produced that is quite steep and very fast to surf.

Arch 3

This arch at most levels is fantastic for stern dipping, with great werley eddies that will help keep the boat spinning once it is on its tail. This arch is also very good for squirt boat mystery moves in all but very high levels enabling head under sinking.

Arch 3 Stern dip

Arch 4

This is proberly the arch with the best feature, a really nice smooth broken wave is formed that is great fun for all levels of paddler, you can front surf, back surf, side surf, flat spin and even perform clean spins!!!

Arch 4

Below the bridge is a perfect place to learn the beginnings of white water, break in’s, break out’s and ferry gliding with the safe feeling that there is nothing down stream to bite you and plenty of room to roll up or be rescued should the need arise. The only worry for swimmers is the fairly steep banks to climb up should you take a swim, and any grumpy fishermen who frequent the banks.
This spot also provides fun for the intermediate paddler wanting to learn to stern dip and flat spin. The spot is also more than deep enough to practice cartwheeling and bow stalls.

On small or continually open water levels you can normally paddle through one of the arches back up to the weir pool, this takes some practice and some times a fair bit of effort. During large weir openings it is impossible to get up through the arches and the only way to get to the weir pool is to get out onto the bank and walk up.

IF IN DOUBT, PADDLE WITH SOMEONE WITH EXPERIENCE OF THIS WEIR.
