Thinking of buying a river kayak or joining Whitewater Action Medway?
20 years a solo climber, I was never into the idea of clubs and teams. Out in my sea kayak, I was happy out there alone too. Whilst having some sea coaching, the coach put me in a river-running boat. After the 17ft sea behemoth, the way it spun and moved reminded me of a skeet sliding on a bed of air –more fun than I’d ever had in a kayak. Hooked within the hour; I bought one the next day. |

How Much? This venture started with the abrupt realization that a flight to Uganda to paddle the white Nile was going to set us back the best part of £800! With other trips planned for the rest of the year this seamed a little frivolous. However we were desperate to find some winter sun, warm water and BIG waves. A quick search of the ol’inter-web and consultation of the surf bible ‘The World Storm Rider’s Guide’ revealed that the average temperature of Lanzarote, one of the Canary Islands was around 20 degrees in January, and that by coincidence it was also the best time of the year to receive surf from the huge Atlantic swells! The best bit was the flight were around £150 and accommodation was cheap and easily available, that was it, decision made, the job was a good un!
